Auston Matthews et les Maple Leafs se déplacent le long de la Queen Elizabeth Way jusqu’au KeyBank Center à Buffalo pour affronter Rasmus Dahlin et les Sabres, rivaux de la division Atlantique, dans le premier match d’un home-and-home. Les deux équipes s’affrontent sur deux jours consécutifs pour la neuvième fois, la dernière remontant au 29-30 novembre 2019. La dernière fois qu’une équipe a remporté les deux matchs remonte au 30-31 octobre 1998, lorsque Buffalo avait gagné 4-1 puis 6-3.
Pendant ce temps, les New Jersey Devils poursuivent leur série impressionnante et mettent leur plus longue série de victoires active en NHL en jeu vendredi face aux Sharks au Prudential Center. Ces derniers viennent de s’imposer pour la première fois cette saison, portés par la performance de Macklin Celebrini, auteur de cinq points lors du dernier match.
La série de victoires consécutives des Devils suit une défaite en ouverture de saison ; le record pour le plus long enchaînement de victoires après un premier match perdu appartient aux Islanders 1982/83 avec huit succès d’affilée entre le 7 et le 23 octobre 1982.
Le défenseur Brenden Dillon joue un rôle clé dans cette réussite et a inscrit le but de la victoire lors des deux derniers matchs. S’il marque à nouveau le but décisif, il deviendra le sixième défenseur de l’histoire de la NHL à inscrire le but gagnant lors de trois matchs consécutifs. Jusqu’à présent, seuls Shea Theodore (2021/22), Seth Jones (2017/18), Andrei Markov (2012/13), Al MacInnis (1993/94) et Mike O’Connell (1982/83) avaient accompli cet exploit.
